Aili Mari Tripp is Associate Dean of International Studies and Professor of Political Science and Women's Studies. Her teaching and research interests are in African politics, comparative politics, and gender studies in an international context. She has published articles and book chapters on women and politics in Africa; women's responses to economic reform; and transformations of associational life in Africa. Most recently she has been writing about the increase in women's legislative representation globally as a result of the introduction of electoral quotas. She also serves on the board of the National Council for Research on Women. Prior to coming to UW-Madison, Tripp worked as a research associate at the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation for two years. She has served as a consultant for the World Bank, United Nations Development Programme, UNESCO, and the State Department.

His research focuses on the origins of large-scale violence against civilians, especially genocide. He has written extensively on the Rwandan genocide, and is currently conducting a comparative study on the causes of genocide. He also teaches and has published on African politics in general and on human rights. He was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize for his earlier work as a journalist, and has received fellowships from the National Science Foundation, United States Institute for Peace, and Social Science Research Council.

Michael Schatzberg's major teaching and research interests are in African politics, comparative politics, and political culture. He is working on a research project that deals with the politics, economics, and culture of football (soccer) in sub-Saharan Africa. He was formerly a Fellow at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars, Washington, D.C.
